Germany Alumnae Chapter Raises Awareness and Funds for Sickle Cell Disease

With September being Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the Ladies of the Germany Alumnae Chapter (GAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. kicked off the month with POUND OUT SICKLE CELL to bring awareness to the disease through exercise, educational awareness and games. This sold out, fun-filled, heart pumping and informative event was well attended by members of the Divine Nine, Masons, Eastern Stars, as well as members affiliated with the military community.

The festivities began with educational awareness by two nurses from the community, followed by games (with prizes); conducted by the GEMS. Once the crowd was pumped up with knowledge, they went straight into the physical/mental health component with a pound workout. The morning’s activities culminated with a ceremonial bubble release symbolizing awareness and hope for a universal cure for Sickle Cell Disease.

Because of the overwhelming support of the community, GAC was able to donate $1,102.00 to MTS Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. Although there is no universal cure, the Germany Alumnae Chapter is committed to the fight and will continue to POUND OUT SICKLE CELL by bringing continuous awareness to the community!

Maximus is a little boy with Sickle Cell Disease and lives in Germany. Delta Sigma Thema Sorority, Inc. received wind of the family’s financial struggle and decided to host a sickle cell awareness event to not only educate, but also raise money to assist with some of the family’s financial obligations. Well, the family was blessed significantly and no longer “needed” the money; so they asked that the funds be donated to MTS Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. on behalf of Maximus.

GAC hopes that its donation blesses the organization and the community served and promises to not only continue to support sickle cell awareness but also pray for a universal cure.
