INTRODUCING

DR. VIVIEN SHEEHAN

Chief Medical Officer

an innovative and transformative leader

We are pleased to announce Vivien Sheehan, MD/PhD, as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the MTS Sickle Cell Foundation. Vivien is a physician scientist and lifespan sickle cell disease provider. Her impressive background in clinical trials, translational research, and patient care of adults and children with sickle cell disease makes Vivien the perfect scientific expert to lead our team.

Dr. Sheehan began her academic journey at Texas A&M where she earned her PhD in Biochemistry before continuing her medical studies at Emory University School of Medicine where, inspired by her patients with sickle cell disease, Vivien would go on to devote all of her time and energy into sickle cell research and patient care.

She completed a med-peds residency in Cincinnati, and two fellowships, Pediatric Heme Onc at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Internal Medicine Hematology at the University of Tennessee, specifically to understand how sickle cell disease impacts both adults and children.

Dr. Sheehan then spent 8 years at Baylor College of Medicine, developing her research program, which includes omics, transition from acute to chronic pain, fetal hemoglobin regulation, gene therapy and red cell rheology research.

Vivien moved to Atlanta in 2020 to serve as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, where she directs the translational sickle cell disease research program.

With Vivien’s expertise, passion, and commitment to the research and development of both disease modifying and curative therapies for sickle cell disease, her addition to the MTS Sickle Cell Foundation’s team positions the organization for considerable growth in research exploration, collaboration, and program development.

We are honored to have Dr. Sheehan as our CMO, marking a pivotal moment for the MTS Sickle Cell Foundation. We eagerly anticipate the invaluable contributions she will make to the Foundation’s growth and success!

Please join us in warmly welcoming Vivien as our new Chief Medical Officer.
